My Language Learning Journey
Learning foreign languages has always been an important part of my life, especially English. Over the
years, I’ve realized that the most effective way I learn a language is through immersion and consistent,
everyday exposure. Watching movies and series, playing video games, chatting with international
friends, and using English on my phone and computer have made the language feel natural and
almost automatic to me. I don’t always study in the traditional sense, but instead, I surround myself
with English as much as possible. This has helped my reading and writing skills improve steadily.
This term, I’ve found that writing blog posts and doing reflective assignments have helped me
understand how I use English and where I can still improve. I’ve also paid more attention to
vocabulary especially expressions by noting down new phrases I come across in shows or games.
One of the most useful tricks I’ve used is talking to myself in English when I’m alone, just to practice
forming sentences quickly. Another helpful tip is to not worry too much about making mistakes when
speaking. Perfectionism can slow you down. Instead, focus on communicating your message clearly.
For future ECIP students, I would recommend using English outside the classroom as much as
possible. Even simple things like changing your phone’s language settings to English or watching
YouTube tutorials in English can make a big difference over time. If possible, speak with native
speakers even online and ask them to correct your mistakes. Gaming, for example, is a surprisingly
useful way to practice informal conversation and learn real-world expressions.
After this course, I plan to keep learning by continuing my usual routines: playing games, watching
English content, and chatting with international friends. I also want to challenge myself more by
reading books in English regularly. One of my goals is to become more confident in speaking.
In my future work, communication will be a vital skill especially written communication, since much
of the tech world runs on emails, documentation, and reports. Clear and concise English writing will
help me explain complex ideas simply, and good spoken English will help me in teamwork and when
dealing with international clients or partners. Language learning isn’t just a subject; it’s a lifelong skill
that opens up opportunities.
I really like how you’ve made English a natural part of your everyday life. Using games, shows, and chatting with friends sounds like such a fun and smart way to learn. It’s cool how you’re focusing on real communication instead of perfection.
VastaaPoistaCommunicating with native English speakers is a great way, but the first step is to overcome a lack of confidence:) I feel insecure about my spoken English when interacting with others in English.
VastaaPoistaGaming is the great way to practice speaking English. I remember joining one game's Discord server because I wanted to play it and none of my friends was interested. At first, I was nervous because I've never really done anything like that before, but it got much better after a while.
